Polarity Change

Here's an easy way to convert your Morris Minor to negative earth to suit all those modern accessories. Modern radios, tape decks, CD players are all negative earth and will be severely damaged with connection to a positive earth electrical system. To convert your car complete the following:-

  1. Disconnect the battery terminals and change around the battery position with the negative post to earth.

  2. Locate and loosen the generator mounting and adjusting bolts.

  3. Remove the fan belt completely and rotate the generator pulley by hand to ensure that it spins freely.

  4. Locate the voltage regulator control box on the fire wall and remove the cover.

  5. Next, push the voltage regulator contacts together. Because the fan belt was removed from the generator it will now spin on its own as it is now acting as a motor. Carrying out this step is the most important procedure as it will correctly polarise the generator for a negative earth and enable it to once again charge the battery correctly.

  6. The final step in this conversion  is to change over the coil low tension terminals. Swap both terminals, the negative terminal should now go to the distributor. If your vehicle is equipped with an ampmeter, these terminals must also be swapped. (ensure battery still disconnected)

  7. Finally, refit the voltage regulator cover, fan belt (adjust to correct tension), and connect battery.
